These brand examples favor compact urgency, explicit savings and shopping paths built around product grids. Repeated preview text and escalating app offers add continuity across otherwise separate promotions.

Sale emails account for 66% of all the emails in this collection, and their subject lines usually put the reason to open first: a percentage, a price, a product or a deadline. Bonobos uses “LIMITED TIME: 25% Off Travel & Gramercy Jeans”, while Anthropologie says “Don’t miss an EXTRA 20% off sale!”. Other formulas use scarcity without stating the discount first, as in “The clearance finds” from Hammacher Schlemmer and “The October Gun Sale Starts Now” from Sportsman’s Warehouse.
The preview text often supplies the condition or deadline missing from the subject line. Le Creuset follows a free-bowls offer with “Free Shipping on Orders $99+. Gather Your Favorites Before They Are Gone.” Menards uses the same preview text, “These Deals Go Fast, Shop Now Before They're Gone!”, for two different sale emails. That reuse creates a recognizable urgency line while the subject changes from general deals to a specific night light.
Adore Me makes the progression especially clear across its emails. “RSVP Requested: (H)appy Hour Savings 📲” introduces an app-only event, while the later “Join Us for (H)appy Hour!” states “Take an EXTRA 25% off — tonight only, on the app.” If you have several messages for one promotion, use the first to establish the occasion and a later message to make the incentive and deadline unmistakable.
The median subject line is 37 characters, but the examples use that space in different ways. Product launches rely on arrival language such as Pact’s “New Fit & Flare Prints Just Landed” and ALO’s “Just Dropped: New Season Essentials”. The NBA takes an even narrower route with “The New Balance Maxey v1”, leaving the product itself to carry the message.
Promotional subjects tend to combine an action with a concrete benefit: “Think Pink 🌺 Save 20% Now” from Teleflora, “30% OFF BOOTS WITH BACKBONE” from Wolverine and “Must-Have Jeans—And They’re BOGO FREE🥳” from Aéropostale. Seasonal emails add context rather than only discount language. Big Lots! uses “🎃 25% OFF ALL HALLOWEEN! 🎃”, while Custom Ink names its “Breast Cancer Awareness Month collection”. These examples give you a clear formula: identify what is new or relevant, then state the offer or action without making the reader infer it.
Product grids appear in 34% of all the emails in this collection. They suit broad or category-led promotions: Jomashop lists watches, sunglasses, fragrances and designer brands, while Aéropostale places hoodies and sweats beside related products. Grid emails commonly give readers several routes into the store, including category links, featured products and shopping buttons.
Discount-code emails make redemption part of the path. Bonobos, Sierra, Wolverine and Vegas all connect the offer to a code, while Benefit Cosmetics applies its discount automatically at checkout instead. Free shipping is another recurring reassurance, appearing with Bonobos, Le Creuset, OfficeSupply, ALO and Jomashop. Use it to answer a purchase objection near the offer, not as a substitute for the offer itself.
Some messages deliberately narrow the choice. Both Arize event invites use a single registration call to action, and the NBA launch uses a single shopping call to action. Their dark backgrounds and pink, teal or blue accents keep attention on the central action. By contrast, Humble Bundle’s blue and dark-background emails support several bundle details and charitable destinations, while Menards uses green around weekly deal content. Choose a focused CTA when there is one next step, and use a grid when the promotion depends on browsing.
Promotional emails sell: sales, launches, seasonal campaigns, restocks and event invites. They are sent to a list rather than triggered by behavior, so the offer and the timing do the heavy lifting.
A single clear promotion converts better than a catalog of deals.
