Real ecommerce lifecycle emails use repeated welcome offers, curiosity-led product stories and carefully timed onboarding. Fenty Beauty’s three-day offer sequence and Anthropologie’s repeated review request make the lifecycle especially clear.

Fenty Beauty sends three welcome messages on day 1, day 2 and day 3. Each keeps the same 15% off offer for qualifying $40+ orders, while changing the framing: "15% off award-winning faves? 🏆 Say less", "15% off lip loves just for you 💋" and "Take ✨15% off✨ your new Fenty faves". The content also repeats free-shipping eligibility, exclusions and offer limits, so each message can stand alone.
Anthropologie uses a different kind of repetition. Its emails on day 5 and day 6 both ask subscribers to submit at least five qualifying product reviews for up to 25% off a future purchase. Around that request, the brand adds styling consultations and shopping categories, giving the incentive a broader brand context.
Welcome and onboarding make up nearly all of the emails in this collection. The welcome messages tend to put the next purchase near the center: REISS offers 10% off a first app order, Urban Outfitters gives a unique 15% code, and Tarte sends a short "15% OFF 💜" invitation. Onboarding messages more often explain how to explore the brand, from Gibson’s guitars and editorial content to Oura’s sensing technology and Noun Project’s icon tool.
The timing supports that distinction without stopping at the first send. The median send is day 2, and 34% of all the emails in this collection arrive on signup day. Notability’s day 0 message gives new users several ways to begin, while later messages such as Gibson’s day 6 feature tip and Oura’s day 7 science explanation answer product questions after the initial welcome.
Offer-led formulas use a percentage, a product, or a deadline. Bonobos combines urgency and a benefit in "Your 20% Off Code Is About to Expire". Fenty puts the saving first, while Charlotte Tilbury uses a reward invitation in "An Unmissable Loyalty Reward Awaits... 💋". Other brands avoid discounts: Quince uses seasonal discovery in "The puffer of the season just dropped", and Oura uses a confidence-building statement in "Trust your data. Know your body."
Preview text frequently supplies the missing detail. Gibson’s "Only available on Gibson.com" clarifies the shopping proposition, while LoveCrafts adds project guidance and a discount in its preview. Keep the subject focused on one reason to open, then use the preview to name the product, threshold, deadline or next step.
Discount codes appear in 39% of all the emails in this collection, and product grids help turn that offer into browsing: examples include Bonobos, Artfinder, LoveCrafts, Quince, Tarte and Missouri Star Quilt Co. Free shipping appears alongside offers in several messages, including Bonobos, Fenty Beauty and Quince. These emails make shopping the obvious route without requiring the reader to interpret a long product story.
A single CTA suits a narrower task. Thorne asks subscribers to start a subscription, Charlotte Tilbury asks them to create an account and join its loyalty club, and Notability directs new users toward getting started. Notability also uses personalization and social proof, while the plain-text 80,000 Hours email relies on a direct, editorial voice for its career guidance.
Lifecycle emails are automated messages that follow a customer's journey: welcome, onboarding, trial, cart, post-purchase and win-back. Together they do most of the work of turning signups into loyal customers.
Emails sent because of what someone did (or did not do) beat fixed schedules every time.
Decide the key moments, like first value, first purchase and risk of churn, then write one email for each.
Judge lifecycle emails by activation, purchases and retention they drive.
