Resend, The Cut, and dozens of editorial brands use sharp headlines, useful preview text, and focused content paths. The clearest differences come from repeated editorial formats, selective offers, and a few distinct layouts.

The emails favor a headline-first subject line: a news hook, opinion, recommendation, or named story. The Streamable uses “🍎 Apple TV is down and there's no end in sight”, while Wealthfront asks “Why is everything turning into a luxury product and/or subscription?”. Other formulas promise a list or recurring feature, as in “Five things you may not know about Sesame Street” and “This Week's Most Popular Stories”. Of all the emails in this collection, 13% use an emoji, usually to signal a sports, media, or entertainment angle rather than to replace the subject's message.
Preview text frequently adds a second hook instead of repeating the subject. The Streamable follows a breaking-news subject with “Plus, lots of football!”, and On3 Recruits follows an alert with “Plus, week 5 predictions, and why CFB player buyouts are about to take center stage.” Jacobin is the clearest exception: both Jacobin emails use the exact same subject, “Economic democracy is at the heart of socialism”, and preview text, “Workers deserve a say over how their workplaces are run — and a claim on the wealth they create.” Treat the two fields as separate editorial space, and make the preview text supply the next reason to open.
Most emails are built around content rather than a sale. Roundups from NiemanLab, AOL Today, NBA, and The Streamable collect several links, while focused emails from Eater, The Information, and Britannica Today in History lead with one story or lesson before adding related reading. The mix is broad: of all the emails in this collection, 66% are newsletters and 34% are digests. That gives you two useful structures to choose from: one clear editorial idea, or a curated stream of items.
Commercial asks appear as supporting paths. SparkFun combines Qwiic project content with a limited-time deal. The Information places subscription plans and subscriber benefits beside reporting, and The Cut asks readers to sign up for weekly chapters after previewing a serialized story. Indie Hackers includes a discount code alongside founder stories and a request for feedback. Other emails ask for support, participation, or input: Sesame Workshop invites support for its nonprofit mission, The Marshall Project includes a survey, and Resend requests feedback on product updates. Keep the main content promise visible before asking readers to buy, subscribe, donate, or respond.
The single-call-to-action treatment appears in The Cut's “The Hater From Feeld, by Lauren Oyler”, Craftsy's “Top Picks: Classes You'll Love”, and Suno's “Get inspired by what Suno creators are cooking up”. Those emails give one destination a clear role, such as signing up, learning, or discovering. Product grids suit recommendation-heavy content: Craftsy displays classes, SparkFun presents boards, PopSugar presents gifts, The Cut presents shopping coverage, and James Clear places recommendations after his recurring ideas.
Most emails use editorial layouts with red as a recurring accent, while individual brands establish distinct palettes. Jacobin uses yellow and red, The Onion uses green, Britannica Today in History uses green, yellow, and orange, and NBA uses a dark background. Plain text is used by Eater for a personal essay and NiemanLab for a media roundup. Founder voice appears in Resend, Really Good Emails, and Indie Hackers, while Resend also uses video and 80,000 Hours makes video central. Use a richer layout for browsing, but choose a focused treatment when one story, video, or action deserves the reader's attention.
Newsletters are recurring editorial emails that keep an audience engaged between purchases or logins: stories, tips, curated links and updates on a regular schedule.
Each issue needs one thing worth reading. Filler teaches readers to skip.
Readers build habits around a reliable day and time.
Newsletters with a clear author and point of view get more replies and forwards.
