Day 2
Day 4
Ecommerce onboarding examples move from welcome and brand context into products, education and offers. Distinctive patterns include a day 3 starting point, repeated welcome language across brands, and discounts woven into practical guidance.

All the emails here are onboarding emails, with a median send time of day 3 after signup. The first messages combine welcome language with a reason to keep exploring: Swan Bitcoin explains its mission, Missouri Star Quilt Co. invites subscribers into its community, and Titleist directs readers to a golf-ball fitting guide.
A larger group arrives on day 4, shifting toward brand education and shopping paths. Canada Goose leads with heritage, Thorne explains its standards, and Specialized introduces its app alongside recommended products. Later messages on day 5 through day 7 move into product education, seasonal collections, customer proof and recurring purchase options. The 80,000 Hours email is explicitly part of an eight-part introductory series, while the other emails read as individual steps in a broader welcome flow.
Subject lines often use a question or an open loop rather than naming a product directly. Blurb asks, "Which bookmaking tool is right for you?"; Urban Outfitters says, "The Gift Shop is almost open…"; and Emma at Artfinder asks, "Looking for the one? ❤️🔥". Other lines promise a clear benefit, such as "Save 177+ hours a year on documentation" or "Ride Smarter with the Specialized App". The median subject line is 34 characters, keeping these invitations compact while leaving room for a specific benefit or mood.
The wording also sets expectations for the email content. "Our Heritage: A Seven-Decade Long Legacy" leads into Canada Goose’s story, while "A better way to wear health" introduces Oura’s product and science. Emoji use is selective: 18% of subject lines use one, including the community invitation from Missouri Star Quilt Co. and Claire’s K-pop message, "Calling all K-pop girlies ✨". Crosswalk.com and Christianity.com use the identical subject line, "You're Invited! Discover Your Faith with Us", despite sending to different audiences, making shared welcome language a notable reuse pattern.
A discount code appears in 28% of all the emails in this collection. Missouri Star Quilt Co. combines a 20% code with community language on day 3, then returns to the same 20% purchase incentive on day 5 while explaining quilting categories and tutorials. LoveCrafts uses a discount alongside exclusive brands in one email and project ideas in another. Blurb similarly puts a 30% offer beside tool guidance, book formats and creator testimonials.
Calls to action range from focused to exploratory. Swan Bitcoin’s mission email, KELTEC’s portal email and Thorne’s subscription email each use a single CTA, keeping the next step narrow. Product grids broaden browsing in emails from Gibson, Windsor and Artfinder, while social proof appears in Blurb, Prashanti Sarees, SimplePractice and Terminix. Free shipping is used in emails from Canada Goose, Rugs.com, Tarte and Quince, often alongside returns, access or product education rather than as the only message.
Onboarding emails guide a new user from signup to the moment the product clicks. They arrive over the first days or weeks, each one moving the reader one step further into setup.
Each email should teach or unlock a single thing. A checklist of ten items rarely gets past item one.
The best sequences skip steps a user already finished and nudge on the ones they missed, instead of sending the same series to everyone.
A screenshot or GIF of the finished state is more convincing than a list of instructions.
Most brands send three to six onboarding emails over the first two weeks, closer together at the start.
