Across these onboarding emails, brands move from setup tasks and first actions to education, community and shopping prompts. The distinctive cadence mixes early activation messages with day-7 editorial or product introductions, often using a focused single call to action.

The early messages are unusually practical. Windsurf asks new users to complete setup, connect GitHub and run a first session, while Arize reduces activation to sending and inspecting a first trace. Poptin gives three setup steps, and LastPass explains how to install its extension and turn on autosave and autofill.
The subject lines make these tasks feel immediate or manageable. “Ready to ship? Complete your setup” uses a direct prompt, while “Your first trace is one command away” reduces the perceived effort. Polldaddy starts a tutorial series with instructions for single-question surveys and WordPress embedding, and Rebrandly follows with a specific tip about connecting a branded domain. Across all the emails in this collection, the median send day is day 3, but these examples show how activation can begin on day 0 or day 1.
Many later messages stop teaching a product action and instead introduce a broader reason to stay engaged. Framer invites users into its Community, Function Health sends a magnesium guide, Brafton shares a popular marketing article, and The Information introduces its reporting through a list of influential technology figures. These are onboarding emails, but their calls to action point toward reading, learning or participating rather than completing setup.
Retail and service brands use the same later window to move from welcome to browsing. Zumba App introduces dance shoes, Beauty Bay invites a first beauty haul, and Quince presents a seasonal puffer. Superdry includes a discount code alongside product collections, while KEH combines a first-purchase offer with a trade-in quote. Other offers take a service-led route: Prose asks subscribers to complete a consultation for a complimentary starter set, and Pictory invites them to a live webinar with bonus AI credits.
The subject formulas are clear without being uniform. Product-led prompts include “Stop typing passwords—start saving them instantly” and “Connect Slack or Teams, and GitHub to Linear”. Benefit-led lines include “Claim 500 extra Agent credits”, while welcome language appears in “Welcome to Confluence 👋” and “Welcome to Taskade. Your Workspace Is Live.” Campaign Monitor and Infogram put “[First name]” directly in the subject line, making the personalization visible before the email is opened.
The calls to action usually narrow the choice. A single CTA appears in the Campaign Monitor, Pictory, Mobbin Team, Dolby, Linear and Beauty Bay emails, among others. Other layouts support browsing or comparison: Custom Ink, Superdry and Republic use product grids. Plain-text treatments appear in Motherduck, Framer, Brafton and Courier, with Motherduck and Courier using a more direct help-oriented tone. Video supports the instructional approach in LastPass and Asana, while Terminix and KEH use customer evidence to build trust.
Onboarding emails guide a new user from signup to the moment the product clicks. They arrive over the first days or weeks, each one moving the reader one step further into setup.
Each email should teach or unlock a single thing. A checklist of ten items rarely gets past item one.
The best sequences skip steps a user already finished and nudge on the ones they missed, instead of sending the same series to everyone.
A screenshot or GIF of the finished state is more convincing than a list of instructions.
Most brands send three to six onboarding emails over the first two weeks, closer together at the start.
