About this tool
Writing a great email is only half the battle. If it lands in the spam folder or the Gmail Promotions tab, nobody reads it. This free email spam checker analyzes the one part of deliverability you fully control - your content - and tells you exactly what spam filters will object to before you send. Paste your subject line and body, and you get a 0-100 spam score, a prioritized list of issues, and a plain-language fix for each one.
Unlike tools that just send a test email and wait, this checker runs instantly and entirely in your browser. Your draft is never uploaded, stored, or shared, which makes it safe to test confidential campaigns, launch announcements, and customer emails.
What this email spam checker looks at
Modern filters like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo evaluate dozens of content signals at once. This tool checks the ones that matter most:
- Subject line problems - ALL CAPS, excessive punctuation (!!!), spammy symbols ($$$), too many emojis, deceptive "Re:" or "Fwd:" prefixes, unfilled merge tags, and length issues. Subject lines are weighted heavily by filters, so problems here count double.
- Spam trigger words - urgency phrases ("act now", "limited time"), money and income claims, risk-free guarantees, and phishing-style language ("verify your account", "you are a winner"). A few are fine; stacking many raises your score fast. For a focused view, pair this with our spam trigger word checker.
- Body and HTML structure - hidden or invisible text, image-only emails, poor text-to-image ratio, oversized fonts, embedded scripts or forms, and bloated markup.
- Risky links - URL shorteners, links to raw IP addresses, "click here" anchor text, and deceptive links where the visible text and the real destination do not match (a classic phishing pattern).
- Compliance basics - whether your email includes an unsubscribe option and a physical mailing address, both required for marketing email under CAN-SPAM. For a full review, use our CAN-SPAM compliance checker.
How the spam score works
The score starts at 100 and subtracts weighted points for each issue, grouped into categories that are individually capped so one noisy area cannot unfairly tank your result. Critical issues (hidden text, image-only emails, phishing phrases, deceptive links) cost the most. Warnings (caps, URL shorteners, missing unsubscribe) cost less, and suggestions (a single trigger word, a long subject) are minor nudges. A score of 90 or above is inbox-ready, 75 to 89 is good with minor cleanup, 60 to 74 needs work, and below 60 has serious spam signals. The tool also rewards good practices so you can see what you are already doing right.
Content is only part of deliverability
Here is the honest part most tools skip: a perfect content score does not guarantee the inbox. The biggest factors in modern spam filtering are sender reputation, authentication, and recipient engagement, and none of those can be measured from your text. Before you send, make sure your SPF and DKIM records are set up correctly, check your domain against blacklists, and confirm your list is clean with our email validator. Think of clean content as the foundation: necessary, but most powerful when your reputation and authentication are solid too. For a wider view, run your domain through our deliverability score tool.
How to fix a low score without weakening your message
When the checker flags something, do not just delete words. Replace vague hype with specifics: instead of "amazing deal", write "30% off annual plans"; instead of "act now", write "offer ends Friday". Specific copy is both more persuasive and less spammy. Swap URL shorteners for full or branded links, add a clear unsubscribe link and your address to the footer, and make sure image-heavy emails carry at least 500 characters of real text. Then re-run the checker and watch the score climb. To polish your subject line specifically, run it through our subject line tester.
