RCS Messaging(Rich Communication Services)

The successor to SMS that adds typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution media, branded sender profiles and buttons to the default texting app on Android and iPhone.

Definition

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a messaging standard defined by the GSMA, the mobile carriers' industry body, to replace SMS and MMS. It runs over mobile data or Wi-Fi inside the phone's default messaging app, Google Messages on most Android phones and Messages on iPhone since iOS 18. For people, RCS brings chat features such as typing indicators, read receipts, group chats and full-quality photos and video. For businesses, RCS Business Messaging adds a verified sender with a logo and brand color, rich cards, carousels and suggested reply buttons.

Why It Matters

For a decade, brands texting customers had to choose between plain 160-character SMS and app-only channels. RCS puts app-like messages into the inbox every phone already has, with verification that helps against spoofed sender names. Apple's adoption in iOS 18 removed the biggest obstacle in the US, so marketers now ask whether to move their SMS programs to RCS. The honest answer is that RCS complements SMS for now: business messaging requires sender approval, coverage depends on carrier and device, and every RCS program needs an SMS fallback.

How It Works

A business registers an RCS agent with a provider, supplies its brand assets and gets approval from carriers in each country it wants to reach. When you send a message, the provider checks whether the recipient's phone and carrier support RCS. If so, the message arrives as a rich chat bubble from your verified profile with images, buttons or a carousel. If not, the provider falls back to SMS or MMS so the message still arrives. Pricing is set by carriers and usually depends on whether the message is a simple text or a rich message, and on whether the user replies.

Example

The same order update sent three ways:

  • SMS: "Your order #4821 has shipped. Track: https://acme.co/t/4821"
  • MMS: The same text with a product photo attached.
  • RCS: A card from the verified "Acme" sender with the product image, delivery date and two buttons, "Track package" and "Change delivery", plus a read receipt for the sender.

Best Practices

  • 1Keep SMS as the fallback for every RCS message, since many recipients still cannot receive RCS business messages
  • 2Collect explicit text messaging consent the same way you would for SMS
  • 3Use buttons and rich cards for actions people already want, such as tracking or rescheduling, not for decoration
  • 4Measure RCS and SMS separately, because read receipts make RCS read rates look higher than SMS click rates
  • 5Check carrier approval timelines before planning a launch date
