Photo: Stella Kalinina Safer San Fernando TPL, partners, and local community members in Los Angeles, California are celebrating the opening of the Pacoima Wash Greenway! Alongside the concrete flood channel, there's now a 1.4-mile corridor that provides safer car free travel options—boosting connectivity and environmental resilience in the San Fernando Valley. Photo: Melody Timothee BERT’s On A Roll Florida voters in Bonita Springs just approved a $35 million bond to acquire and begin developing the Bonita Estero Rail Trail (BERT). This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform a former rail corridor into a place where people can safely walk, bike, connect, and enjoy the outdoors. Photo: Steven Gnam For Wildlife & Water TPL and partners recently protected 7,472 acres of working forestland in Spokane County, expanding the Spirit of Mount Spokane project to more than 29,400 contiguous acres across Washington and Idaho. The newly protected lands will remain as working forests while providing free, non-motorized public access for recreation, and protecting wildlife habitat and drinking water for the region. Photo: Caroline Martin Photography Bird’s the Word TPL recently announced an additional 540+ protected acres to Virginia's Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Thanks in large part to funding from the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund, the new acreage will protect critical habitat for birds like the bald eagle as well as create expanded recreational opportunities for hunting, public water access, and new trails and outdoor spaces. Photo Joe Appel Photography Greenfield, Let’s Play! Pittsburgh’s Greenfield Elementary recently celebrated the opening of a new community schoolyard, transforming asphalt into a vibrant green space with new play equipment and outdoor amenities. The project connects 2,500 people to nature within a 10-minute walk and highlights the potential of the Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act to bring similar investments to communities nationwide. Photo: Caroline Martin Photography A New Tribal Schoolyard TPL recently partnered with the Red Lake Nation to open a Tribal schoolyard at Endazhi-Nitaawiging Charter School. As one of the first Indigenous charter schools in Minnesota, the school is focused on immersing their youth in Ojibwe language and culture, including a green space with walking trails and medicinal plants to expand connection to outdoor spaces.
