The Marshall Project event invitation

Invites readers to a free online workshop about censorship in prisons, including a hands-on session filing public records requests. It also offers a donation option for readers who cannot attend.

The Marshall Project

Day 24 after signup

Do you want to shed light on censorship in prisons?

You can this Wednesday

Why it works

  • Lead with the issue and explain who the event is for so readers can quickly judge its relevance.
  • Pair the event overview with a specific, hands-on activity to make the invitation concrete.
  • Keep the registration request distinct, then offer a secondary way to support the cause for people who cannot attend.

How it is built

  1. Personal greeting
  2. Workshop overview
  3. Hands-on activity details
  4. Registration call to action
  5. Personal sign-off
  6. Donation alternative

Dear Friends, If you care about censorship and information access, this email is for you. This Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 1-3 pm ET, our colleagues at MuckRock will be hosting a free interactive workshop on Zoom with speakers from The Marshall Project, Data Liberation Project, and Prison Policy Initiative, along with Moira Marquis of Prison Banned Books Week. The 2-hour training will cover how censorship happens in prisons nationwide, but you’ll also get to roll up your sleeves and join a ‘FOIA-thon’ to push for more transparency. Volunteers will train you to file requests for data on how many books are stopped from reaching people inside, then help you file those requests live on the call. You’ll leave armed with more knowledge and having had the chance to put that knowledge to use to expose carceral book bans happening across the country. Will you join us? Sign up for the training I hope to see you there! With gratitude, Michelle Billman Partnership and Engagement Associate The Marshall Project P.S. If you can’t make this week’s training, you can show your support for fighting censorship and for our staff and volunteers by donating instead — your gift will allow us to put together more events like this one in the future.
