How to Connect ChatGPT Dots to Sequenzy

9 min read

Dots are OpenAI's always-on agents in ChatGPT. A dot can use the plugins on your account, which means connecting Sequenzy once gives your dot access to campaigns, sequences, subscribers, segments, templates, and analytics.

This guide takes about ten minutes.

What You Need

  • A ChatGPT plan with dots: Pro or Business Premium, or Enterprise with dots turned on by an admin
  • A Sequenzy account
  • The ChatGPT desktop app or web app (mobile web is not supported for dots)

On Enterprise, the Use dots (Beta) setting is off by default, and admins control which plugins a dot can use. Ask your workspace admin first if you do not see dots or custom plugins.

Which Sequenzy URL to Use

https://api.sequenzy.com/v1/mcp/openai

This is the ChatGPT endpoint. It has the same account permissions as Sequenzy's standard MCP server, but leaves out tools that create API keys, return raw webhook payloads, or produce subscription links. That trimmed tool set suits an agent that works while you are away.

Step 1: Add Sequenzy as a Custom MCP Plugin

  1. In ChatGPT, go to Plugins.
  2. Choose the option to add a custom MCP server.
  3. Name it Sequenzy and paste the URL above.
  4. Choose Create as a plugin.

OpenAI renames these menus from time to time. If the labels differ, look for custom MCP servers or developer settings under Plugins or Settings.

Step 2: Sign In and Choose Permissions

ChatGPT opens the Sequenzy sign-in page. Sign in, review what ChatGPT may do, and allow access.

Grant only what you plan to use. Reporting needs read access to campaigns, sequences, and analytics. Drafting needs write access to campaigns and templates. Subscriber deletion and sending can wait until you trust the setup.

Step 3: Check Write Access on Your Plan

OpenAI's help center describes custom MCP servers with read and write access on Business and Enterprise, and read-only access on Pro. If your dot can list campaigns but every create or update call fails, this is the first thing to check.

Read-only access still covers a lot: performance reports, audits, reply summaries, and deliverability monitoring.

Step 4: Confirm the Workspace

Message your dot:

Using the Sequenzy plugin, which workspace are you connected to? List the
active sequences with their trigger and the last three campaigns with send
date and status. Don't change anything.

If it reports the wrong workspace, ask it to list your Sequenzy workspaces and switch. Mention the workspace by name in your Custom Rules or standing instructions so later tasks start in the right place.

Step 5: Set Custom Rules

Open Settings > Personalization > Custom rules and add rules for email work. Dots support four outcomes:

Sequenzy actionRule
Read reports, campaigns, sequences, repliesTake action without asking
Create or edit draft campaigns and templatesTake action when you say so
Send a test emailAsk before taking action
Send or schedule a campaign, activate a sequenceAsk before taking action
Delete subscribers or make bulk changesHand off to you

Custom Rules add to OpenAI's built-in checks; they cannot remove them. OpenAI also states that asking a dot to draft something does not grant permission to send it.

Step 6: Subscribe to Events (Optional)

This is where a dot differs from a chat assistant. Sequenzy publishes MCP events, and dots can subscribe to them and wake up when one fires.

Subscribe to Sequenzy email.replied events for our onboarding sequence.
When one arrives, read the reply and the subscriber's history, draft a
response, and send it to me in Slack for approval. Do not send it yourself.

Other useful subscriptions:

  • email.complained and email.bounced for a deliverability alert
  • subscriber_import.completed to check an import as soon as it finishes
  • sequence.finished to suggest a follow-up for people who completed onboarding without upgrading

Each subscription only sees events your connection has permission to read. Event triggers need the service to support event monitoring, so if your dot says it cannot subscribe, reconnect the plugin and check that you granted read access for that data.

Step 7: Add a Weekly Summary

For recurring work, dots need a saved schedule:

Every Monday at 9am, review last week's Sequenzy results: sends,
conversions, unsubscribes, complaints, and sequence completions. Compare
with the previous four weeks and send me a short summary with one
recommendation. Read only.

The schedule appears in your dot's Scheduled list, where you can pause or edit it.

Troubleshooting

The plugin does not appear for my dot

Make sure the plugin is enabled for your account, not only created. On Enterprise, an admin may need to allow it in plugin controls.

Sign-in loops back to ChatGPT without connecting

Finish the Sequenzy sign-in in the same browser profile as ChatGPT and allow pop-ups. Then remove and recreate the plugin if it still shows as disconnected.

Tools return permission errors

The error names the missing Sequenzy permission. Disconnect and sign in again, granting that permission, or check your role in the Sequenzy workspace.

The dot uses its browser instead of the plugin

Ask it to "use the Sequenzy plugin". Browser use is slower and harder to review.

Disconnecting

Remove or disable the plugin in ChatGPT, then revoke the connection's key in Sequenzy under Account Settings > API Keys, where remote MCP connections appear as personal keys.

FAQ

Which URL do I use for ChatGPT?

https://api.sequenzy.com/v1/mcp/openai.

Is Sequenzy in the ChatGPT plugin directory?

Not yet. Add it as a custom MCP plugin.

Why can my dot read but not write?

Most often the plan: Pro may be limited to read-only custom MCP access.

Can my dot react to replies?

Yes, by subscribing to Sequenzy's email.replied event.

Will it send without asking?

Drafting does not grant sending, and a Custom Rule can require approval for every send.
