Deferred Deep Linking

A link that sends someone without your app to the app store and, after they install and open the app, takes them to the specific content the link pointed to.

Definition

A deep link opens a specific screen inside an app, such as a product page or an invite, instead of the app's home screen. A deferred deep link does the same for people who do not have the app yet: it routes them to the App Store or Google Play, remembers where they were going, and opens that destination on first launch after install. Standard deep links, including iOS Universal Links and Android App Links, only work when the app is already installed, so deferred deep linking needs extra infrastructure, usually from a linking or attribution provider.

Why It Matters

Every link in an email, ad, referral or QR code that dumps new users on a generic onboarding screen loses context and conversions. Deferred deep linking keeps the promise of the link: a friend's invite lands on the invite, a product ad lands on the product, a promo code is already applied. It is especially important for referral programs and paid acquisition, where the first session decides whether a new install becomes an active user.

How It Works

When someone taps the link, the linking service records the click and its destination, then sends the user to the right store. After install, the app's SDK asks the service on first launch whether a pending deep link matches this device. On Android, the Google Play Install Referrer passes click data reliably. On iOS there is no equivalent, so providers match the click and the install using methods such as pasteboard handoff or probabilistic signals, which are less precise and restricted by Apple's privacy rules. If a match is found, the app routes the user to the stored destination. Google's free Firebase Dynamic Links, once a common choice, shut down in 2025.

Example

A referral flow with deferred deep linking:

  • Alex shares a link: "Get 1 month free on FitPlan: fitplan.app/r/alex"
  • Sam taps it on an iPhone without the app and lands in the App Store.
  • Sam installs and opens FitPlan, which skips the generic welcome and shows "Alex invited you. Your free month is ready."
  • The referral is credited to Alex automatically.

Best Practices

  • 1Use deferred deep links for referrals, paid ads, QR codes and emails sent to people who may not have the app
  • 2Always define a sensible fallback destination when no match is found
  • 3Keep the first screen after install consistent with the promise in the link
  • 4Test on fresh installs for both iOS and Android, since behavior differs
  • 5Review your linking provider's iOS matching method against Apple's privacy rules

Link Types Compared

Link type App installed App not installed
Standard URL scheme (myapp://) Opens the screen Error or nothing
Universal Link or App Link Opens the screen Opens the website
Deferred deep link Opens the screen Store, then the screen after install
