October 15, 2026   MOVIES Should We Feel Sorry for Elizabeth Holmes? The former Theranos CEO appears fragile and oddly sympathetic in Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s new documentary — but how much should we believe? By Cat Zhang Photo: A24/Courtesy Everett Collection The Elizabeth Holmes of You Can See Everything is not the turtlenecked tech visionary from the Forbes cover, the awkward dancer depicted in the The Dropout, or the criminal defendant showing up to federal court in princess curls. The Elizabeth Holmes you see in A24’s mind-warping new documentary is a different woman. She’s a devoted mom and wife. She wears calm, neutral colors. Call her Liz. She’s also 35 days away from incarceration. In 2022, the disgraced former Theranos CEO was sentenced to 11 years in prison for defrauding investors; seven years earlier, federal regulators and The Wall Street Journal had delivered the bombshell revelation that Theranos’s revolutionary blood-testing technology that purported to run hundreds of lab tests on a single blood prick did not, in fact, work. Holmes stayed silent, convinced of her innocence. But eventually, Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans, approached A24 for a documentary, believing that radical exposure would clear her name. Miraculously and unbelievably, the couple opened their San Diego home to Nathan Fielder — not a journalist but a cringe comedian now invited to live alongside one of the most cringe subjects of all. Manipulator, meet manipulator. Alongside his co-director, Lance Oppenheim, and their film crew, they accomplished the impossible: illuminating something new about Holmes, when both metaphorically and literally, her case seemed to be closed.
