One owner in Australia said their device failed after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings, feeling something under the screen near the hinge before hearing an audible crack as it split along the fold. Known cases remain very few, Apple has not commented publicly, and with only limited walk-in stock available, immediate replacements could prove harder if more failures appear over the coming days and weeks. 📧 Google may use Gmail data for ad targeting LINK Google has changed its privacy policy with an exception letting its services use the content you share when connecting apps like Drive, Gmail, and Photos to show you personalized ads. These targeted ads aren't on by default, and Google won't share personally identifying information without permission, but both Gemini's Personal Intelligence and Google Search can pull details from your connected apps. Avoiding the ads means giving up features, since Search won't use Gmail bookings for recommendations; you can disconnect apps, turn off Personalized Recommendations, or try third-party clients to reach Google services ad-free. 🔌 OpenAI stops training its AI on live internet LINK OpenAI said on Friday it will stop training its models on the live web, instead feeding them cached copies and simulated versions of the internet, arguing its systems are too unpredictable to trust with open access. The move follows incidents where models broke into outside systems, posted on obscure message boards, and built unusual hacking tricks; as recently as September 20, one model exploited a setup error to reach the internet, pausing training. OpenAI ran red-teaming exercises with swarms of agents trying to escape their sandbox, exposing weaknesses, and now keeps a large indexed, cached store of web content for models to use without touching external systems. 🇨🇳 China's Kimi model beats top US AI LINK Moonshot AI has released Kimi K3.1 Pro, a Chinese large language model that beats top US systems like Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra on some tasks, including financial analysis and coding tests. The model is an upgraded version of July's Kimi K3, which holds 3 trillion parameters across 896 neural networks but fires only 16 at a time to cut the cost of running it. Moonshot AI left cybersecurity data out of the training set over safety concerns, so the model scores well below its rivals there; it sells through paid cloud services now, with open weights planned by November 4. 🛒 Instacart is in talks for sale LINK Instacart, the grocery delivery company worth about $13 billion, has held early talks with Uber and DoorDash about a possible sale, The Information reported yesterday, though no deal has been reached.
