Back-in-Stock Notification
An automated email alerting customers that a previously out-of-stock product they were interested in is available again.
Definition
A back-in-stock notification is an automated email sent to customers who expressed interest in a product that was out of stock. Customers sign up for notifications on the product page, and when inventory is restocked, the email fires automatically. These emails convert at exceptionally high rates because they target people with demonstrated purchase intent for a specific product.
Why It Matters
Out-of-stock products represent lost revenue, but back-in-stock notifications recover a significant portion of those sales. Conversion rates for these emails are typically 10-20%, among the highest of any email type. They also capture demand data that helps with inventory planning and show customers that you value their interest, building loyalty.
How It Works
A "Notify me when back in stock" button on out-of-stock product pages collects email addresses (or uses existing subscriber data). When inventory is updated and the product returns to stock, the email platform automatically sends a notification to everyone who signed up. The email includes the product with a direct buy link. Some platforms add urgency by mentioning limited stock.
Best Practices
- 1Add a clear "Notify me" signup on every out-of-stock product page
- 2Send the notification immediately when inventory is updated to capture demand first
- 3Include urgency messaging if stock is limited (only if true)
- 4Show the specific product they requested with an image and direct buy link
- 5Consider including 1-2 similar products in case their interest has shifted
- 6Track notification signups as a demand signal for inventory planning
