Overview
Mautic and ConvertKit serve entirely different users. Mautic is open-source marketing automation for technical teams. ConvertKit is a creator economy platform for building and monetizing audiences. See our detailed ConvertKit comparison for more alternatives.
Different Worlds
ConvertKit is built for creators: bloggers, YouTubers, podcasters, and course creators who want to build an email list and monetize it. Mautic is built for marketing teams who need sophisticated automation, lead scoring, and custom workflows. Comparing them is like comparing a creator tool to enterprise software.
Monetization vs Automation
ConvertKit has paid newsletters, digital product sales, tip jars, and a creator network for cross-promotion. Mautic has advanced automation, lead scoring, and website tracking. They emphasize completely different capabilities based on their target users.
Email Philosophy
ConvertKit intentionally keeps emails simple and text-focused. The philosophy is that personal-feeling emails perform better for creators. Mautic supports more elaborate email designs. Neither is wrong; they serve different purposes.
Technical Requirements
ConvertKit takes minutes to set up. No technical skills required. Mautic requires PHP expertise, server administration, and ongoing maintenance. The technical barriers are not comparable.
For SaaS Companies
Neither is ideal for SaaS. ConvertKit lacks the automation depth and Stripe integration. Mautic has automation but requires development for Stripe. Sequenzy was built for SaaS with native Stripe integration and subscription-focused automation. See our pricing page.
Infrastructure Ownership and Control
The most significant difference between Mautic and Kit (ConvertKit) is who controls the email infrastructure. Mautic gives you complete ownership of your data and sending infrastructure. Kit (ConvertKit) manages everything on your behalf.
Self-hosting provides data sovereignty, complete customization, and freedom from vendor pricing changes. Managed platforms provide convenience, managed deliverability, and professional support. Your choice depends on whether your team has the technical resources to manage infrastructure or prefers to focus entirely on marketing.
Deliverability and Sender Reputation
Email deliverability depends more on your sending practices than your platform choice. Proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication, clean subscriber lists, and consistent sending patterns matter more than which tool you use. Both Mautic and Kit (ConvertKit) can achieve good deliverability when configured correctly.
That said, managed platforms typically handle deliverability infrastructure automatically, while self-hosted or API-based solutions require more manual attention. Use an email validator to clean your lists before sending, regardless of which platform you choose.
Migration Path and Switching Costs
If you are considering switching between Mautic and Kit (ConvertKit), plan for a transition period. Contact lists can be exported and imported via CSV, but automations, templates, and integrations will need to be rebuilt. Domain authentication records need to be updated, and your sender reputation may temporarily dip during the transition.
Budget at least two to four weeks for a full migration, including parallel running of both platforms to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Use the email warmup calculator to plan your sending ramp-up on the new platform and maintain deliverability throughout the transition.
