ICE detains people in secret. We’ve just sued to help make it public. The Marshall Project on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to force those agencies to disclose the people in their custody. The suit, filed on The Marshall Project’s behalf by Chicago-based public-interest law firm Loevy & Loevy, seeks access to the names, ages and locations of everyone in ICE’s detention database. We believe this to be the first lawsuit seeking access to the full database since President Donald Trump returned to the White House. “We are seeking the same transparency and access to information that have existed within the criminal justice system for centuries,” says Jennifer Peter, TMP’s editor-in-chief. “The city needs to get its act together about the culture at the city jail.” There have been at least 22 deaths at the St. Louis Justice Center since 2022 and our new investigation reveals three main causes. People frequently die in that aging jail because of untreated medical conditions, drug use or the consequences of addiction, or suicide. The jail has long faced significant problems, including low staff levels, inadequate medical care and gaps in the monitoring of detainees. Now there’s been a rise in the jail’s population as well. In collaboration with St. Louis Public Radio, TMP’s Ivy Scott and Ilica Mahajan and STLPR’s Lacretia Wimbley have the story. The Marshall Project
Election 2026 is less than two weeks away. Some national security officials have begun warning state governments and congressional leaders about the possibility that Trump administration officials will try to interfere in the midterm elections. The Washington Post Homeland Security officials asked the agency that is supposed to protect elections to obtain and then hack a voting machine. The initiative shocked staffers at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, who say they were told by Trump officials not to alert the company that makes the machines if they discovered flaws. The New York Times The Texas man who died in ICE custody over the weekend was a lawful permanent resident, ICE now says. The Texas Tribune The family of a Maryland man who died in ICE custody in late September has yet to receive an explanation for what happened. The Washington Post More: Mahmoud Khalil, the lawful permanent resident detained by federal immigration officials for his participation in pro-Palestinian protests, has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to permit federal judges to more quickly evaluate and resolve detention cases. Thousands of acts of child abuse, captured on a California mansion’s monitors. Police in Los Angeles County arrested Guojun Xuan and Silvia Zhang earlier this month for what prosecutors say is an “unprecedented case of child abuse.” The couple gathered more than 20 babies into their mansion through surrogates and then allegedly watched on 32 surveillance cameras as nannies physically abused them. Prosecutors say Xuan himself participated directly in some of the abuse. The couple, who have pleaded not guilty to the charges and have tried to overcome an extraordinarily high bail amount, allegedly kept at it even after they were briefly jailed on suspicion of child abuse last May.
