Friend, it’s been one year since the ceasefire deal in Gaza, and everyday life is still extraordinarily dangerous and difficult.
“I never imagined we’d end up living in tents. I never imagined that one day I would lose my husband, my father, and my brother. I never imagined I’d lose my legs.”
25-year-old Shorouq once ran a hair salon in Gaza. One night, her building was struck by an Israeli missile. She lost her legs, and with it, the life she had built. Today she raises her three-year-old from a tent, and her mother cares for them both.
Since the beginning of the conflict in early October 2023, Oxfam has supported 20 local partners providing food, clean water, sanitation systems, and hygiene support. Together, we have reached 1.53 million people like Shorouq with humanitarian aid.
Oxfam works with more than 2,300 local organizations and partners in more than 75 countries around the world. We are able to show up and mobilize lifesaving resources to support families like Shorouq’s because of generous supporters like you.
Will you donate today to support a Palestinian-led recovery in Gaza, reach people in need in over 75 countries, and advocate for long-term solutions to poverty and injustice?
According to the United Nations, most of the 2.1 million population in Gaza lacks adequate food, shelter, and sanitation. Water is life, but in Gaza, it has been turned into a weapon. Learning has stopped for three years. The human toll is catastrophic. At least 73,000 Palestinians—and possibly over 100,000—have been killed by direct violence. The entire Gaza Strip is in ruins.
As we look ahead to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, we know that rebuilding will take years and require peace, billions in funds, and input from the people most directly affected by the war. That’s why we’re advocating for Palestinians to lead the recovery.
But right now, plans for Gaza’s future are being drawn far from the tents where its people like Shorouq live—displaced by Israeli forces in this cruel war. Ahmed, a civil engineering student living in a displacement camp, wants to be one of the engineers rebuilding his city. “I belong in Gaza, and Gaza needs me,” he says.
To build Gaza anew, meaningful reconstruction is only possible under genuine Palestinian ownership at every stage to ensure input from people like Shorouq and Ahmed—those most directly affected by the war. We’re advocating for an unprecedented response that matches the unprecedented scale of the loss.
Because of our generous supporters like you, Oxfam can respond immediately after disasters strike and remain for as long as we’re needed to save lives and help people rebuild. We fight inequality at the root of these crises to ensure that people like those living in Gaza can not just survive, but thrive and lead lives with dignity. But our work grows more urgent by the day.
Make your donation to help families experiencing conflict, hunger, displacement, and injustice in Gaza and beyond.
Thanks for your support,
