I remember the exact moment I realized I would never live with my husband again. I was standing in our kitchen, holding on to the back of a chair for support — both physical and emotional — while he explained that he would be staying with friends for a few nights before driving from California, where we lived, to New Jersey, where we grew up. He called it a trial separation. He told me it was temporary. Maybe he believed that. I didn’t. A few months later, our marriage was over, and I suddenly faced a problem I’d never anticipated I’d have at 36: Where was I going to live?
This happened a year ago. That chair is in a storage pile in my parents’ basement now; both the chair and I still haven’t found a permanent home. |
