Science Corporation implants its vision-restoring chip in its first Stargardt disease patient (5 minute read)

Science Corporation's vision-restoring chip, PRIMA, is commercially available in Europe for patients who have lost their sight to an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration, but the company believes its approach can be applied to multiple diseases. It recently implanted the chip in a patient with Stargardt disease, an inherited eye disease that gradually destroys central vision. The company's work with PRIMA is part of a broader pursuit of a novel brain-computer interface. It envisions a future where BCIs expand into a wide range of medical technology applications rather than just being used to control computers.

Redesigning source control at Anthropic (23 minute read)

Anthropic was being bottlenecked by developer infrastructure built for human scale, so it built an in-house version control system called Scion to support its next stage of growth, and fully migrated its monorepo from git in five months. It also built and shipped a code review surface, code search, a rich source control IAM system, novel ways of managing and landing large amounts of reviewed code, and more, all in that same time period. Anthropic averaged about 2,500 code changes merged per day in May. It now merges over 30,000 per day, and the rate of growth isn't expected to slow down anytime soon.
How to be more ambitious: A tutorial for humans with models (8 minute read)

There are four types of ambition. Speed gets the same work done in less time. Altitude involves going up in abstraction and considering the outcome rather than the individual task. Depth considers a task the way a field-leading expert would, going one level deeper and touching the underlying data, tools, and problems. Range draws on multiple fields rather than just the one the task might need at the surface using knowledge, tools, and techniques you normally wouldn't.

Were we blue-collar workers all along? (3 minute read)

Blue-collar workers typically do the hands-on labor of making or fixing stuff. Software developers have tried to separate themselves from this category, but they also make or fix stuff, just in bits rather than atoms. Just like electricians or carpenters, software developers must spend years practicing their craft in order to become skilled and sought-after. Just like anyone else in a skilled trade, software engineers can be outpaced by technology.
